Snoring and sleep apnea: what's the difference?

Snoring

Is a noise caused by vibration of the soft tissues of the throat when the airways narrow during sleep. In the vast majority of cases, it’s benign. But in almost 40% of cases, it conceals a more serious pathology: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSA).

Sleep apnea

Characterized by involuntary breathing interruptions lasting between 10 and 30 seconds, which can occur dozens of times an hour. The body and brain no longer regenerate properly, with serious consequences for long-term health.

It is estimated that 80% of sleep apnea sufferers remain undiagnosed.

Is snoring normal?

Snoring is common and often benign

However, when it becomes severe or is accompanied by sleep apnea, it can have real consequences for health.

Untreated apnea increases the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, type 2 diabetes, chronic fatigue and daytime sleepiness. This sleepiness can also multiply the risk of accidents, particularly on the road or when performing dangerous tasks.

Early identification of the causes of snoring and apnea can therefore lead to appropriate treatment and lasting improvements in sleep quality.

Our solution: the custom-made Mandibular Advancement Orthosis

Snoring affects almost 7 out of 10 people, and can affect the quality of sleep and the life of a couple.

One of the most effective solutions is the custom-madeMandibular Advancement Orthosis (MAO ), worn only at night, which gently holds the lower jaw slightly forward.

A few millimetres are all it takes to clear the airways, reduce the vibrations responsible for snoring and improve sleep over the long term.

Our solution

Customized Mandibular Advancement Orthosis OAM

Is a dental device that you wear only at night. It gently holds the lower jaw in a slightly forward position – just a few millimeters are enough to clear the airway and eliminate the vibrations that cause snoring.

Why the OAM rather than the CPAP mask?

The continuous-pressure respirator (CPAP or PPC) is effective for severe apneas, but difficult to tolerate on a daily basis: noise, congestion, travel constraints. Some 30% to 40% of patients end up abandoning it. CustomizedOAM offers decisive advantages: it’s discreet, silent, requires no electricity and can be taken anywhere. It is indicated as a first-line treatment for mild to moderate apneas, and as an alternative to CPAP in cases of intolerance.

Proven clinical results

Our anti-snoring device has been evaluated in hospitals and clinics by sleep specialists, ENT specialists and dentists: +90% success rate: nearly 9 out of 10 users notice a disappearance or significant reduction in snoring within the first few nights +80% improvement: for mild to moderate apneas, the severity of respiratory arrest is reduced by more than 50% to 99% compliance: users report excellent long-term tolerance 97% have no significant dental or joint impact

How is snoring treated at Ares Dental?

Treatment with an Orthèse d’Avancée Mandibulaire (OAM) follows a precise protocol to ensure an effective, comfortable and long-lasting result:

  • Initial consultation: Assessment of your symptoms, dental and joint examination, and verification that there are no contraindications. This step confirms that the anti-snoring mouthpiece is right for you.
  • Sleep assessment: If sleep apnea is suspected, we can refer you to a specialist (pulmonologist or ENT specialist) to perform a ventilatory polygraph and confirm the diagnosis.
  • Made-to-measure dental impressions: Precise impressions are made to design an orthosis perfectly adapted to your dentition and oral morphology.
  • Orthosis manufacture: Your anti-snoring appliance is manufactured in our laboratory within 2 to 3 weeks to guarantee comfort, precision and effectiveness.
  • Customized fit and adjustment: Worn only at night, the mouthpiece holds the lower jaw and tongue slightly forward, freeing the airways. A few millimeters are all it takes to facilitate airflow and directly reduce the causes of snoring.
  • Regular follow-up: Regular check-ups allow us to adjust the mandibular advancement, verify the effectiveness of the treatment and ensure that there is no impact on the dentition.

The result: a simple, minimally invasive and highly effective anti-snoring treatment that delivers lasting improvements in sleep quality.

For all other problems, we have an SOS Orthodontics service that can deal with your urgent requests.

CNS and Tiers Payant (PID) reimbursement in Luxembourg

Is OAM reimbursed by the CNS?

Yes, under certain strict conditions. The Caisse Nationale de Santé may cover the cost of a mandibular advancement orthosis if the following criteria are met:

A prior sleep study (polygraph or polysomnography) attesting to OSA. A medical prescription from a specialist (pulmonologist, ENT specialist or neurologist)

The indication is for mild to moderate apneas, or proven intolerance of the CPAP mask.

Tiers Payant PID at Ares Dental

As a CNS-approved practice, we apply Direct Immediate Payment (PID). For procedures covered by the CNS nomenclature, you pay only your personal share on the spot, without any advance payment.

We provide you with a detailed, transparent estimate before any treatment is carried out. Our administrative team will help you draw up a claim form and advise you on the possibilities for reimbursement by your complementary health insurance.

Snoring in figures

These figures illustrate the scale of the problem and the effectiveness of treatments: 1 in 5 adults suffers from some degree of obstructive sleep apnea. 80% of sufferers remain undiagnosed.

Chronic snoring affects 40% of men and 25% of women. The risk of road accident is 6 times higher in cases of untreated daytime sleepiness.

Yes, the first effects are generally noticeable within the first few nights. A significant improvement is observed in over 90% of users within the first few weeks.

Some patients report mild discomfort at the start of treatment: slight muscle tension, hypersalivation or transient dry mouth. These effects are generally transient, and disappear after a few days’ adaptation. Our team makes any necessary adjustments during follow-up sessions.

A drugstore orthosis is thermoformable, but not professionally customized. It does not offer the precise adjustment of mandibular advancement needed to effectively treat apnea. A customized OAM is made from your dental impressions and adjusted by your dentist for maximum effectiveness and optimal long-term tolerance.

Characteristic signs are: regular, noisy snoring, breathing pauses reported by those around you, waking up with a feeling of suffocation, intense fatigue on waking despite a full night’s sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness. A consultation with Ares Dental or a sleep doctor will help you make a precise diagnosis.

OAM requires a minimum number of stable natural teeth to hold it in place. During your initial consultation, our practitioners will assess feasibility based on your dental situation.

The average life of an OAM is 3 to 5 years, depending on maintenance and mechanical constraints (associated bruxism). Renewal is possible after this period, with CNS coverage.
